The Universe Provides

One time, I was travelling to San Francisco, and I’d just gotten a new toiletry bag to travel with. It has a hook so you can hang it and get items out of it easily. Pretty simple and easy to use, unless the only thing available to hang it from is oriented perpendicular to the direction you want to use it, in which case you can’t hook it. This was the case at my hotel for the trip.

Being the type to fixate on a thing until I can resolve it, I tried a hardware store less than a block from my hotel, but did not find an adequate solution. I wanted an S-hook — they had a few, but all were small and bulky and not suited to hanging from a thick towel bar.

I was annoyed but still endeavored to relax and enjoy the trip.

A day or two later, I met up with Thomas Snyder and Tyler Hinman for some escape rooms. Them — the champions of sudoku, puzzles, and crosswords; me — a weird taco enthusiast. The dream team.

At lunchtime, we grabbed some take-out and looked for a park or a public square to dine. We found one, grabbed benches, and ate.

Twenty or so minutes later, I finished my food, and stood up to find a trash can for my trash.

My foot hit something and made a jingling sound.

I looked down.

An S-hook.

Sometimes, the universe provides. I don’t know how. I don’t understand it. Sometimes I think maybe humanity reached the point of smartphones and medical breakthroughs and nanochips and whatnot, and God decided “okay, y’all have had a few thousand years to get your shit together, and from now on, miracles will just be weird little happenstances and nudges in the right direction”.

Idk. It’s weird.

But since then, I’ve been able to hang up my toiletry bag.

  1. Serendipity is a wonderful thing. Whenever a waitperson brings me the wrong order, I take it as a sign that the universe intended for me to have something else.
